Employment Information

Medical assistants are allied health professionals who perform both administrative and clinical tasks in physician offices, hospitals, and clinics. Key duties include measuring vital signs, recording patient histories, preparing exam rooms, assisting with exams, performing phlebotomy, and managing patient scheduling. They work under the supervision of physicians.

Clinical Duties (Back Office)

Measure and record vital signs such as blood pressure, pulse, and temperature.

Prepare patients for and assist physicians with examinations and minor procedures.

Collect and process laboratory specimens, including blood draws (phlebotomy).

Sterilize medical instruments and maintain exam room sanitation.

Administer medications and injections as directed by a physician.

Provide patient education regarding care instructions.

Administrative Duties (Front Office)

Schedule patient appointments and manage front-desk reception.

Update and maintain patient electronic health records (EHR).

Handle medical billing, coding, and insurance paperwork.

Answer telephones and manage clinic correspondence.

Required Qualifications & Skills

Education: Completion of an accredited medical assistant program or related certificate.

Certifications: Often required, such as the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA).

Skills: Proficiency with EHR software, strong communication, interpersonal skills, and attention to detail
